Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Poems

Say what you will about “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”, but you have to admit that they treated the subject very well. Despite its flaws in certain departments, it was one movie which I felt was very well made, especially for a movie that obviously paid a lot of attention to the eye-candy.

The show stealer for me though was the poetry by Javed Akhtar, which “Imran” recited at key points in the movie. It blended in beautifully with the story, as well as made it an absolutely memorable one. And reaffirmed Javedji’s place in modern poetry as second to none.

Pighlay neelam sa behta hua yeh samaa
Neeli neeli si khamoshiyaan
Na kahin hai zameen
Na kahin aasmaan
Sarsaraati huyi tehniyaan, pattiyaan
Keh rahi hain ki bas ek tum ho yahaan
Sirf main hoon.
Meri saansein hain aur meri dhadkanein

Aisi gehraiyaan
Aisi tanhaiyaan
Aur main, sirf main
Apne honay pe mujhko yaqeen aa gaya

I love those lines for the  evocative imagery they portray. I have never seen or heard the feeling of being alone, and discovering the self, better than these.

Ik baat honton tak hai jo aayi nahin
Bas ankhon say hai jhaankti
Tumse kabhi, mujhse kabhi
Kuch lafz hain woh maangti
Jinko pehanke honton tak aa jaaye woh
Aawaaz ki baahon mein baahein daalke ithlaye woh
Lekin jo yeh ik baat hai
Ahsas hi ahsas hai

Khushboo si hai jaise hawa mein tairti
Khushboo jo be-aawaaz hai
Jiska pata tumko bhi hai
Jiski khabar mujhko bhi hai
Duniya se bhi chupta nahin
Yeh jaane kaisa raaz hai

I had heard these lines much before the movie, and I had understood them to be very different from the way they were picturised. I had thought these to be the thoughts of a shy lover, who could not bring himself to profess his love to his lover, although it was evident to both, and to the world, that there was magic in the air.

Jab jab dard ka baadal chaya
Jab gum ka saya lehraya
Jab aansoo palkon tak aya
Jab yeh tanha dil ghabraya

Humne dil ko yeh samjhaya
Dil aakhir tu kyun rota hai
Duniya mein yunhi hota hai

Yeh jo gehre sannate hain
Waqt ne sabko hi baante hain
Thoda ghum hai sabka qissa
Thodi dhoop hai sabka hissa
Aankh teri bekaar hi nam hai
Har pal ek naya mausam hai
Kyun tu aise pal khota hai
Dil aakhir tu kyun rota hai.

Words that give you support when you are down, which tell you that you are not necessarily out. Give you strength to go on.

And finally, my absolute favourites:

Dilon mein tum apni betaabiyan leke chal rahe ho,
Toh zinda ho tum.
Nazar mein khwabon ki bijliyan leke chal rahe ho,
Toh zinda ho tum.

Hawa ke jhokon ke jaise aazad rehna seekho,
Tum ek dariya ke jaise lehron mein behna seekho,
Har ek lamhe se tum milo khole apni baahein
Har ek pal ek naya samaa dekhen yeh nigahaein

Jo apni aankhon mein hairaniyan leke chal rahe ho
Toh zinda ho tum
Dilon mein tum apni betaabiyan leke chal rahe ho
Toh zinda ho tum

These lines, recited by Farhan against the backdrop of all three of them running with the bulls, wraps the movie up very aptly. They all discover the true meaning of “living”, running past and conquering their fears of life and love, and the realization that they all have transcended into a different stage of self-actualization.
